I’M A JOURNALIST/CARTOONIST FOR A COLLEGE PAPER IN THIS CITY BUT I’VE MET THIS GUY

He’s a good dude with a passion for human rights and he uses art as a medium to express that which words alone can’t. He’s been at the PG since before I was born and in 1999 he was a Pulitzer Prize finalist.

The Post-Gazette came under new management recently, with Keith Burris taking over as the editorial board manager. Burris is a racist who supported Trump and published an article called Racism as Reason which is exactly what it sounds like. I almost worked for this paper over the summer but didn’t because I’m a transgender Jew who draws political cartoons and frankly I didn’t want to have to answer to Burris.

But yeah this is BAD STUFF, guys. The PG was once a liberal paper that prided itself in its advocacy for the underdog. Times are changing under Trump, and we can’t ignore it!

I kind of really hate that, in any discussion regarding why the idea that a “strong female character” has to be big tough and “manly” is wrong, the first thing people do is say that they want or there should just be more tough female characters who ALSO so traditionally feminine things. Like…that’s kind of always how it’s been??? I can think of way too many pieces of media where a female character and is tough and hard but there’s a moment that’s like “oh she likes this [insert cutesy thing] or cares about this [insert appearance based thing] ooh look she’s still a girl!!” In my opinion, the solution to the problem is not to make those secret traits her main traits and call it a day, but to like… actually focus on making her a person? like the solution everyone posits is legit just “make her more feminine and that makes her a better woman character”. Basically saying that the way to make a good woman character is to make her more feminine.
And like, I think that’s sort of bullshit. There should be tough as nails women, women who like traditionally “feminine” things, and then there should be women who are just…people who like a wide variety of things? I’ll use myself as an example. Like sure, I like cute things, I like romance, I’m attracted to men, and I love flowers. But like, if you were to see me, the only traditionally feminine thing about me is my long hair. I don’t wear makeup, I don’t style my hair, my clothing choice is made on the basis of what I own that doesn’t currently smell bad, and I just HATE shopping for clothes and shoes. Despise it. I don’t want children and I definitely never want marriage. But I’m also not that “masculine”. I don’t like cars, I’m incredibly physically weak, I don’t like fixing things up and etc, but I do like things and to do things society sees a “boy’s things” like video games, eating a lot of food, getting messy, being crude, and etc (and am attracted to women too lmao).
My point kind of it, the way to make more interesting and broadly relatable women is not to just have tough women and girly women. There’s a lot of shit inbetween there that people, even well intentioned ones, seem to forget. People should focus on creating characters who feel like people, not just adding more “girl” traits onto their female character.
